Out of 150 submissions, Avila’s Crown Heights Participatory Urbanism project was chosen as one of 10 winners.

CROWN HEIGHTS PARTICIPATORY URBANISM is the culmination of a nomadic research project by Manuel Avila, SUPERFRONT Brooklyn’s 2011 Architect-in-Residence. The project takes a landscape urbanism approach to rethink residual spaces adjacent to the Franklin Avenue shuttle train. Avila’s notion of Participatory Urbanism is founded on the idea of creating a common ground for residents, business owners, governmental entities and local community organizations to collaborate in the imagination of pluralistic public spaces. Manuel Avila is an urban designer and a resident of the the Crown Heights neighborhood since 2008. An independent jury of New York architects and artists selected Manuel Avila’s proposal from a talented pool of New York based applicants.
The Architect-in-Residence program and this exhibit are achieved with the generous support of First Pacific Advisors, LLC, Brian Slocum, Ada Tolla, Mark Gardner and the SUPERFRONT Board of Directors, as well as exhibit production support from Jaklitsch / Gardner Architects.
All materials are due Monday December 6, 2010. One selected winner to be announced in January 2011. The Architect-in-Residence will develop research and projects from January 19 through March 18 with an exhibit that opens to the public March 2011.
SUPERFRONT’s Architect-in-Residence program supports emerging artists and architects from under-represented social demographics, especially LGBT women, and/or Black, Latino, and/or Pacific Islander architects of any gender, in their development as artists or architects working with urban space. Candidates based in Brooklyn are also given preference. The Residency selects candidates from a juried selection process, based upon their written statement and portfolio of works. The program emphasizes experimental and interdisciplinary work within the context of contemporary architecture.
The Architect-in-Residence receives dedicated workspace, including a desk with internet access and tools for model-making, from January 19 – March 18 2011. The work produced during the residency will be exhibited to the public through the remainder of March 2011. The Architect-in-Residence will receive support for his/her project in the form of desk crits from select members of the Jury, curatorial support, access to free materials through Materials For the Arts, and a stipend of $500.
To apply: Submit work samples (not to exceed 2MB), resume/CV, and project statements (not to exceed 1,000 words) to residency@superfront.org via email. Work samples should relate to the project outlined in the project statement. Submission deadline is 5:00PM Monday December 6, 2010.
The SUPERFRONT Architects-in-Residence program began in 2009 with a summer artist residency, followed by the winter 2009/2010 inaugural Architects-in-Residence program with Francisca Benitez and Pawel Niedzwiecki. After 3 months of development of their individual projects, SUPERFRONT presented the work of Francisca Benitez and Pawel Niedzwiecki in MAKING SPACE, the first annual SUPERFRONT Architects-in-Residence exhibit in January 2010. MAKING SPACE was on view at SUPERFRONT from January 3rd – March 28th, 2010 with a catalog (paperback, 91 pages, 5″ x 8″, black and white interior ink) published through print-on-demand at www.lulu.com/superfront

Based upon the submitted work samples, the CV, and project statements of the applicants, the jury selects one candidate who demonstrate the most potential to develop new experimental work that will engage the public with a contemporary architectural theory or practice. The jury looks for clarity of the experiment and/or interaction with other disciplines proposed, as well as the significance of the proposal within the context of contemporary urbanism.

SUPERFRONT is a not-for-profit organization for architectural experimentation and creative interdisciplinary exchange. Since January 2008, SUPERFRONT has invited students, emerging architects, designers, visual artists, and performance artists to engage in a public forum that raises awareness of contemporary architectural practice and theory. A Brooklyn-based organization, SUPERFRONT fosters creative interdisciplinary exchange amongst emerging architects, artists, and the public through exhibits, publications, panels, and temporary built projects.
