Apply now to be SUPERFRONT Architect-in-Residence 2011

All materials are due Monday December 6, 2010. One selected winner to be announced in January 2011. The Architect-in-Residence will develop research and projects from January 19 through March 18 with an exhibit that opens to the public March 2011.

SUPERFRONT’s Architect-in-Residence program supports emerging artists and architects from under-represented social demographics, especially LGBT women, and/or Black, Latino, and/or Pacific Islander architects of any gender, in their development as artists or architects working with urban space. Candidates based in Brooklyn are also given preference. The Residency selects candidates from a juried selection process, based upon their written statement and portfolio of works. The program emphasizes experimental and interdisciplinary work within the context of contemporary architecture.

The Architect-in-Residence receives dedicated workspace, including a desk with internet access and tools for model-making, from January 19 – March 18 2011. The work produced during the residency will be exhibited to the public through the remainder of March 2011. The Architect-in-Residence will receive support for his/her project in the form of desk crits from select members of the Jury, curatorial support, access to free materials through Materials For the Arts, and a stipend of $500.

To apply: Submit work samples (not to exceed 2MB), resume/CV, and project statements (not to exceed 1,000 words) to residency@superfront.org via email. Work samples should relate to the project outlined in the project statement. Submission deadline is 5:00PM Monday December 6, 2010.

The SUPERFRONT Architects-in-Residence program began in 2009 with a summer artist residency, followed by the winter 2009/2010 inaugural Architects-in-Residence program with Francisca Benitez and Pawel Niedzwiecki. After 3 months of development of their individual projects, SUPERFRONT presented the work of Francisca Benitez and Pawel Niedzwiecki in MAKING SPACE, the first annual SUPERFRONT Architects-in-Residence exhibit in January 2010. MAKING SPACE was on view at SUPERFRONT from January 3rd – March 28th, 2010 with a catalog (paperback, 91 pages, 5″ x 8″, black and white interior ink) published through print-on-demand at www.lulu.com/superfront

Based upon the submitted work samples, the CV, and project statements of the applicants, the jury selects one candidate who demonstrate the most potential to develop new experimental work that will engage the public with a contemporary architectural theory or practice. The jury looks for clarity of the experiment and/or interaction with other disciplines proposed, as well as the significance of the proposal within the context of contemporary urbanism.

Announcing architects-in-residence for Fall 2009

SUPERFRONT is proud to announce our Architects-in-Residence for Fall 2009. Their work will be exhibited in January 2010.

PAWEL NIEDZWIECKI, Architect-in-Residence Summer/Fall 2009, uses his technical skills as a designer and craftsmen to produce large-scale artwork in mixed media. Exploring digital lazer cutting technology, as well as hand-crafted wood work, Pawel’s creative practice is grounded by his rigorous and beautiful hand-drawings. Most pieces begin as sketches. Themes include ornate patterning and detailed continuous lines, such that Pawel’s work often evokes tattoos or musical scores. As Projects Intern at SUPERFRONT in 2008, Pawel managed the construction process for large-scale exhibits and installations. Pawel holds a Bachelor of Fine and Applied Arts in Architecture, as well as a Masters of Architecture, both from the Savannah College of Art and Design.

FRANCISCA BENITEZ, Architect-in-Residence Summer/Fall 2009, has been a New York based artist since 1998. Her work investigates and comments on the ways individuals, groups and society inhabit space. She graduated as an architect from the Universidad de Chile in 1998 and later studied art at Hunter College CUNY, where she completed her MFA in 2007. Her work has been exhibited in the Americas, Europe and Asia, most recently at the Instituto Cervantes in Beijing, China; Lokal.int in Biel-Bern, Switzerland; CCCB in Barcelona, Spain; Jersey City Museum in New Jersey, US; Itaú Cultural in Sao Paulo, Brazil; Smack Mellon and Exit Art in New York, US. She has been awarded an independent project grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, a Lambent fellowship from the TIDES foundation, and a FONDART grant from the Chilean Government.

Be an Architect-in-Residence

become an architect-in-residence this summer

Emerging architects: apply for the 2009 ARCHITECT-IN-RESIDENCE program at SUPERFRONT. Submit your CV, portfolio, and brief project proposal to info@superfront.org with subject “RESIDENCY” by June 25th. The residency offers emerging architects an opportunity to develop a project for exhibition, publication or construction. Materials are available through the generous support of Material for the Arts (MFTA). Residents will share responsibility for developing a fundraising program to fund their projects beyond materials available at MFTA. Project budgets are not expected to exceed $500. Live-in residency is available in the newly renovated lofted studios for $675/month including utilities. 3-6 month terms.

The Residency Program at SUPERFRONT for Fiscal Year 2009 formalizes an ad hoc program of interdisciplinary exhibition and collaboration that emerged at SUPERFRONT in 2008. The program consists of facilities and resources for two Architects-in-Residence and one Artist-in-Residence. Our first Artist-in-Residence is multi-media artist Sienna Shields Horton. This residency, from March 2009 through September 2009, entails Horton’s large-scale crochet work, furniture explorations and architectural photography with a related exhibit at the SUPERFRONT gallery opening July 12. Two Architects-in-Residence will join SUPERFRONT for a six month term from June 2009 through December 2009. The overlapping summer engagements open the possibility for interdisciplinary collaboration, which is a hallmark of the SUPERFRONT mission.

The residency program at SUPERFRONT offers emerging artists and architects 3-6 month opportunities to research and fabricate projects. The residency offers no funding, only space and access to the resources of SUPERFRONT, which include a woodshop, a growing collection of AV equipment, access to Materials for the Arts, and curatorial support.
